The high cost of ‘slipper and tripper’ payouts
The adverse impact of “slipper and tripper” payouts on
insurance companies, shopping centre owners and their tenants has
been highlighted by evidence given at a recent hearing of the HIH
Royal Commission.
A witness who helped audit HIH in 1999, told the hearing that he
was concerned about HIH’s public liability exposure in 1997 and
1998 because of what were called “slipper and tripper”
account payouts growing sharply. This refers to people suffering
falls in places like supermarkets and shopping centres.

The swing is to Internet
More than 95% of all Australian businesses are connected to the
Internet and 72% of those have set up some form of web presence,
according to a survey by the Sydney-based Allen Consulting Group.
Revenue generated by online activities grew 43% to $43 billion in
the 2001/02 financial year, the equivalent of 6.4% of Australia’s
gross domestic product.

Erina Fair set to flourish
About 20 new retailers, including Coles Supermarkets, have been
signed up for The Corner, the first stage in the $210 million
refurbishment of the NSW Central Coast’s Erina Fair.
The Corner has been specially designed for convenience shopping
and features easy access – and exit for the additional 600 car
spaces which have just become available. In total, Erina Fair now has
4,500 car spaces.

$50,000 for false labelling
The Federal Court, Hobart, has imposed a $50,000 fine on Tasmanian
knitwear company GIA Pty Ltd (in liquidation) which traded as Tamar
Knitting Mills, for falsely representing that Chinese-made polo
shirts supplied by Tamar over a 12-month period were made in Tasmania
by Tamar.
The court imposed a $4,000 fine on former Tamar managing director
Eric Ian Thompson, for having been knowingly concerned in the
company’s contravention.

Franchisors hit out at ACCC
A closer relationship and the development of an educational
program is planned between the Franchise Council of Australia Ltd
(F.C.A.) and Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
(A.C.C.C.)
This follows a series of concerns expressed recently by the F.C.A.
in a hard-hitting submission to the Dawson Committee now reviewing
the Trade Practices Act.
In its submission the F.C.A. claimed it had received numerous
complaints from its members concerning the Act and the processes and
conduct of the ACCC.

Marks & Spencer has become the first British company to trial
the new NCR Fastlane checkout devices, branded SCOT(Self Checkout
Till).
The company is the U.K.’s leading clothing retailer, with
more than 12.4 million square ft of trading space across 312 British
stores, and also trades online.

Fone Zone named best mobile phone reseller
Australia’s largest privately owned mobile phone retailer,
Fone Zone has been voted National Dealer of the Year at the recent
Telstra Dealer Awards in Melbourne.
Fone Zone also carried off the Solution Innovator Award for its
web-based solution called i-order that assists the corporate and
government sectors to more effectively manage their mobile phone
fleet and cut costs.

Cashcard Australia Ltd, (Cashcard) a leading independent provider
of financial payments services, has acquired Electronic Banking
Solutions Ltd (EBS), a specialist in ATM and EFTPOS solutions for the
retail merchant market
The deal adds a significant retail ATM network to Cashcard’s
existing operations.
