Vic Tenancy Bill sparks concern
A Bill outlining the proposed changes to the Retail Tenancies
Reform Act 1998, had its Second Reading in the Victorian
Parliament, today (Thursday, October 10) more than two years after
the review was announced.
The Bill proposes a wide range of changes to the Act, but
(sensibly) does not provide for security of tenure or a standard
tenancy agreement – two of the present State Labor Government’s
stated objectives prior to winning government, says Maddocks, a
leading Melbourne commercial law firm.
Despite this, there are a number of significant changes which will
be of concern for all landlords, warns Maddocks.

Making it in Manila
If Metcash can make it in the Philippines, it can make it
anywhere. That sums up stockmarket reaction to the wholesaler’s
decision last week to join in a venture with the Manila-based
wholesaler Suy Sing Commercial Corporation.
The country has a volatile economy, a closeknit business culture
and a transport and communications infrastructure that even in Manila
itself, leaves much to be desired.

What are reasonable hours?
And what do they mean for workplace relations? Now that the
Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC)
has accepted that working hours have changed significantly over
recent decades, these are two questions on every employer’s
lips, says Sydney law firm Abbott Tout.
In a landmark decision, the AIRC has inserted into a number of
federal Awards a provision conferring employees a right to decline to
work unreasonable overtime having regard to their personal
circumstances including - amongst other things - family
responsibilities.

Tea-time gentlemen, please…
After 172 years, would your shop fittings fetch £112,000 (A$320,000)?
That was the top price at an auction last week of the interior of one
of Britain’s oldest teashops.
The shop was opened in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, in 1830 and
maintained the name of one of the early owner-families – WTM
Snape - on its shingle until its last day.
