Vic Tenancy Bill sparks concern

A Bill outlining the proposed changes to the Retail Tenancies Reform Act 1998, had its Second Reading in the Victorian Parliament, today (Thursday, October 10) more than two years after the review was announced.

The Bill proposes a wide range of changes to the Act, but (sensibly) does not provide for security of tenure or a standard tenancy agreement – two of the present State Labor Government’s stated objectives prior to winning government, says Maddocks, a leading Melbourne commercial law firm.

Despite this, there are a number of significant changes which will be of concern for all landlords, warns Maddocks. More...

ACCC acts over Westfields

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has begun proceedings in the Federal Court, Brisbane against Westfields, alleging misleading or deceptive conduct and/or unconscionable conduct in breach of the Trade Practices Act 1974 in its dealings with a former tenant of its Indooripilly shopping centre.

Related companies and representatives of Westfields have also been joined in the proceedings for allegedly aiding or abetting or being knowingly concerned in the breaches. More...

Making it in Manila

If Metcash can make it in the Philippines, it can make it anywhere. That sums up stockmarket reaction to the wholesaler’s decision last week to join in a venture with the Manila-based wholesaler Suy Sing Commercial Corporation.

The country has a volatile economy, a closeknit business culture and a transport and communications infrastructure that even in Manila itself, leaves much to be desired. More...

Australia’s largest music store, the Australian Academy of Music, is celebrating its 35th birthday this year with the Brisbane “super store” attracting an increasing number of music enthusiasts to its newly-renovated premises, and enjoying its status as a destination store for South-East Queensland and Northern NSW musicians.

Established in 1967, the Australian Academy of Music began as a small music store and teaching academy located on Leichhardt Street in Brisbane’s inner city suburb of Spring Hill. More...

Touchcorp taps into a new market

Victorian-based Touchcorp, an expert in electronic services delivery, has accelerated a network of self-service Touch machines at Shell service stations into a broader range of counter-top systems.

The systems bring customers a wide range of products that would otherwise be impossible to offer at petrol stations, newsagents, and shopping centres. More...

What are reasonable hours?

And what do they mean for workplace relations? Now that the Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) has accepted that working hours have changed significantly over recent decades, these are two questions on every employer’s lips, says Sydney law firm Abbott Tout.

In a landmark decision, the AIRC has inserted into a number of federal Awards a provision conferring employees a right to decline to work unreasonable overtime having regard to their personal circumstances including - amongst other things - family responsibilities. More...

Tea-time gentlemen, please…

After 172 years, would your shop fittings fetch £112,000 (A$320,000)? That was the top price at an auction last week of the interior of one of Britain’s oldest teashops.

The shop was opened in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, in 1830 and maintained the name of one of the early owner-families – WTM Snape - on its shingle until its last day. More...
