Plus Points Pinpointed
Plus Points Pty Ltd, the Melbourne-based customer tracking and
rewards group, is gearing up to win big business from shopping
centres, following its takeover and infusion of capital by Pinpoint,
claimed to be Asia Pacific’s largest marketing company.
Plus Points launched its customer tracking and rewards (CTR)
program nearly four years ago and has two major clients, Guardian
Pharmacies (290 outlets), and Collins Booksellers (65 outlets).

Vive le DJ difference…
David Jones department stores’ “significant point of
difference” proved to be crucial in the past 12 months of the
most ferocious discounting seen in the market for many years,
retiring CEO Peter Wilkinson told the annual meeting on Wednesday,
December 4.
Almost 70% of womenswear and menswear offer is exclusive to David
Jones in the department store segment, where earnings before interest
and tax rose 20.5%.

Retail boycott campaign hits home
David Jones Limited and the Coles Myer Ltd have issued statements
pointing out that they are apolitical and wholly-owned and
Australian-managed groups.
This follows their listing in a leaflet campaign urging Australian
Muslims to join an international Islamic boycott against “US-owned
and Israeli supporting companies”.

Cracking the challenge of a tenancy code
In a country where a handful of shopping centre developers
dominate a marketplace of 20 million or so people, having a
consistent national retail tenancy code would seem to be an obvious,
and indeed overdue step, of benefit to interstate landlords and
retailers alike.
Yet mere mention of a national leasing code strikes fear into the

Officeworks takes over Viking
Coles Myer subsidiary Officeworks is expected to complete its
acquisition of Viking Office Products Pty Ltd, Australia’s
largest direct marketer of office supplies, within the week.
According to Coles Myer CEO John Fletcher, the move will establish
Officeworks as a major multi-channel provider of office supplies.

Keep an eye on things with DVR
In a commercial environment of reduced margins, shifting customer
loyalties and increased competition, retailers can ill-afford the
financial burden of asset shrinkage from shoplifting, robbery and
employee theft.
And with litigation against employers on the rise, nor can retail
store owners afford to be lax when it comes to safeguarding

To pay GST - or not to pay… That is the question By

The impact of the GST Transaction Act are now being felt in the
market place. In particular, Section 13(5), which has the effect that
a market review of rent constitutes a review opportunity which
triggers payment of GST.
It was a concern when GST legislation was launched that some
leases would not enable landlords to recover GST from tenants once a
review opportunity occurred.

Qld retailer sets up radio station
Brisbane-based Super Cheap Auto, has its sights set on boosting
sales figures by being what is claimed to be the Australian first
retailer to have its own live in-store radio network-SCAR FM.
Super Cheap Auto managing director Bob Thorn argues that launching
the station has benefited both the company and its suppliers.
“Our main purpose for developing Scar FM was to enhance the
retail environment we provide our customers but in achieving this
goal we will also enhance the sales opportunities for our suppliers,”
he says.

Food-Rite Stores get it right
Continued improvement, commitment to standards, promotional
compliance, customer service, staff training, implementing group
initiatives and re-investing into the business are just some of the
reasons why several major AUR Food-Rite stores won store awards at
the recent Victorian awards night.
Steve and Karen Price of Orbost AUR Food-Rite won the award for
Store of the Year and also took out the 2002 awards for Best
Externally Supplied Meat Department and Best Delicatessen Department.

IGA gives $70,000 worth of goods
In a drive to help the drought-stricken farmers of Australia, IGA
and suppliers have donated 31 pallets of non-perishable goods worth
$70,000.
The 1,600 cases of goods were provided to the Rain Train,
organised as part of the Christmas Hamper Appeal put together by
Steve Price on 2UE in Sydney.
